RIDDLE ME THIS: MYSTERIES OF HISTORY
This summer have your young sleuths (7-13 years old at the start of camp) unravel the mysteries of our past, using skills of deduction, disguise, and observation in historic downtown Annapolis. Go back in time to colonial Maryland, six different Ancient civilizations, and even the days when history’s most notorious pirates roamed our waters! Each day your aspiring “Sherlock Holmes” will learn of the secrets and mysteries that still remain unsolved in history, from the dawn of man to today. These inquisitive detectives will master all the skills necessary to become a world-class spy, an artful mystery writer, a colonial gentlemen or lady, and a fearsome pirate! Come explore Annapolis and all of its secrets this summer for a memorable, educational, and fun week!
5 Days of Mystery
On the first day of camp learn about the importance of Annapolis and the customs of our founding fathers. Embody a real person of history for a day, learn about their career, and practice practical skills from the period like sewing and butter churning. Play colonial games and explore William Paca’s garden.
Ancient History Day
Travel back in time to the Ancient world and visit China, Greece, Egypt, the Aztecs, Mesopotamia, and even cavemen! Learn tai-chi from an instructor, make a cave painting, and theorize how the pyramids were built (without aliens!)
Join the secret world of spies and create a secret identity. Learn about and practice “dead drops” around Annapolis, and decode the secret messages of your enemies. End the day with a scavenger hunt around Annapolis, solving clues as you go!
Private Eye Day
Explore the supernatural and take a tour of Annapolis’ haunted sites in the morning. Afterward discuss literary and film detectives and their role in solving crimes. Try to emulate their skills and solve a crime staged by Historic Annapolis. Finally write and perform your very own mystery play using the knowledge you have gained of mystery stories throughout the day!
Ahoy there landlubbers! Wanna learn how to be a reeeeealll pirate? Design your own pirate flag or “jolly roger” to strike fear into the hearts of your enemies, drink grog, negotiate the rules of your ship, and learn the skills needed to navigate the seven seas. Think yer ready? At the end of the day, we’ll test your sea-legs!
