The Art and Science of Historic Paint AnalysisDate: Tuesday, January 24, 2017 Location: James Brice House, 42 East Street Time: 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm Some of the most important evidence of how people choose to decorate their houses is hidden from the naked eye but can be deciphered from samples taken from protected areas of walls and woodwork. Paint and wallpaper samples can be as small as a pinhead, but they provide vast amounts of information about original colors and decorative materials. Dr. Susan Buck is a conservator and paint analyst in private practice whose portfolio boasts treatments and paint and finish analysis for institutions including Mount Vernon, Monticello, Montpelier, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Drayton Hall, and the World Monuments Fund Qianlong Garden Conservation Project in The Forbidden City in Beijing. In this lecture, Dr. Buck will discuss her research for the aforementioned institutions, as well as important recent discoveries in the ongoing paint study of the James Brice House.
