Try printing pamphlets that spread revolutionary ideas\, learn about healing herbs\, sew stars\, and practice writing colonial-style letters. Have your silhouette created in the Summer House for a unique keepsake!  \nNote: All presentations of Meet Frederick Douglass will take place at the Museum of Historic Annapolis. \nAccessibility Considerations: Accessing the interior of the William Paca House requires ascending and descending several flights of stairs. Visitors with limited mobility can access the brick Paca Garden Terrace via the driveway of the Paca House. A single-use accessible restroom can be accessed by a ramp. The upper portion of the garden can be accessed via a ramp with handrails\, but please note that garden pathways are loose pea gravel and steps must be traversed to access the lower levels of the garden. \n\nMuseum of Historic Annapolis:  \nStep into our American Story at the Museum of Historic Annapolis. There are no restrooms on site. \n\nAbout our Presenters: \n\nNathan M. Richardson is a published author\, performance poet and Frederick Douglass Historian. He is the author of four collections of poetry and teaches a variety of workshops for emerging writers and spoken word artists. Nathan is now in the 14th year of The Frederick Douglass Speaking Tour – a living history performance that captures completely the physical\, spiritual and intellectual essence of the former slave\, writer\, orator and abolitionist Frederick Douglass. Nathan is a Chautauqua Scholar with more than 500 living history performances across the country.\nThe New Century American Irish-Arts Company is a private\, not for profit corporation dedicated to the artistic furtherance\, cultivation\, and preservation of Irish traditional music and dancing in the United States. They help traditional musicians\, dancers\, teachers\, and researchers produce vocational work that brings traditional culture to the public.\nLauren Muney of Silhouettes By Hand has been a professional artist\, entertainer\, special-event producer\, and consultant for over 35 years. Alongside her graphic illustration degree from a leading arts college\, her experience with live events of all types ranges across the United States\, Canada\, Australia\, and in Asia and Europe.\nAnnapolis Living Historians are highly researched\, historically accurate living historians who interpret people of the past. A true American of the mid-Atlantic region\, his family includes indigenous Pocomoke heritage\, Pennsylvania Dutch\, Welsh\, Swiss\, English\, Scots-Irish\, Boyko Ukrainian and Ashkanazi Jewish\, he honors all of his ancestors as a practicing living historian and regularly participates in colonial era reenactments\, interpretations and public educational events. He has studied and become proficient in the reading of Wampum and works diligently in the research and preservation of the Eastern Woodland languages\, particularly Renape and Mahican and is educated in the many European languages at use in the Colonial Period. He was the first garden manager of Western Connecticut State University’s Permaculture Garden\, and practices Native horticulture. If you do not wish to be photographed or filmed\, please opt out by notifying Historic Annapolis staff.\nAbout the Civil War First Maryland Volunteer Infantry Regiment: \nThe Original First Maryland mustered into the United States service in Baltimore\, MD in May 1861\, for three years of service. It was stationed at various places in Maryland during the ensuing year\, doing guard duty most of the time along the Upper Potomac and C&O Canal. In March 1862\, it crossed into Virginia with BanksÕ troops and moved up the Shenandoah Valley. The regiment was stationed at Front Royal\, Va.\, where\, on May 23\, 1862\, it was surrounded and cut off by JacksonÕs rapid movement. Their gallant opposition retarded JacksonÕs advance\, giving Banks ample time to withdraw in safety from the Valley. The regiment was paroled in September\, and two months later it was declared exchanged. In the meantime\, the small part of the regiment which had escaped capture\, together with some recruits\, preserved the organization and was assigned to the Maryland Brigade (First\, Fourth\, Sixth\, Seventh\, and Eighth Maryland). In March 1863\, this brigade was assigned to KellyÕs Division\, Eighth Corps\, and served in the West Virginia campaign. Upon LeeÕs invasion\, the brigade retired to Maryland\, where\, on July 10\, 1863\, it was assigned to the First Corps. In March 1864\, it was transferred to the Fifth Corps. The regiment re-enlisted\, and on its return from its veteran furlough the battalion of veterans arrived at the Harris Farm just in time to enter that action\, its loss there amounting to 6 killed\, 29 wounded\, and 2 missing; a heavy percentage of loss as only a small number were engaged. Colonel \nDushane was killed at Weldon Road\, and Colonel Wilson fell at DabneyÕs Mills The men served with distinction till the end of the war. \nAbout First Maryland Living History: \nThe First Maryland Volunteer Infantry Regiment has been an active living history group since its formation in 1972. The organization is made up of dedicated volunteers who have an interest in the history of the Civil War period and strive to accurately portray the life of the common soldier or civilians from the State of Maryland. The First is involved in living history demonstrations\, authentic encampments\, educational lectures\, ceremonial events\, and battle reenactments across the Mid-Atlantic region. Occasionally\, the unit travels beyond the mid-Atlantic as the ELF Mess. The group takes part in programs regularly in national and state parks; a privilege reserved for organizations with high state discipline and authenticity. A wide variety of events take place every year. The First designates one event each month as a company event\, at which we urge our members to turn out. \n  \n  \n \n  \n
