DESCRIPTION:Bring a friend and join us on the tented terrace of the Paca Garden for a presentation featuring food historian Joyce WhiteÕs new book Cooking Maryland’s Way: Voices of a Diverse Cuisine. This book is a companion to Maryland’s Way\, The Hammond-Harwood House Cookbook\, published in 1963. \nAuthor Joyce M. White will share her inspiration for writing the companion book and key cultural influences on the formation of Maryland’s early foundational cuisine. Ms. White will read aloud an excerpt from the book and copies will be available for purchase. \nAdvance registration recommended\, but not required. Visitors with limited mobility can access this program via the driveway of the Paca House. A single use accessible restroom can be accessed by a ramp. \nCost: FREE \n \n  \nAbout the Book: In 1963\, the Hammond-Harwood House Association published MarylandÕs Way\, The Hammond-Harwood House Cookbook\, which includes over 700 recipes sourced from centuries-old manuscript recipe books and contributions from Marylanders from across the state. In the new companion book\, Cooking Maryland’s Way: Voices of a Diverse Cuisine\, food historian Joyce M. White\, supported by several contributing authors\, reflects on the chief cultural influences of Maryland’s early foundational cuisine: Native American\, African American\, German\, and British. Extensive research on both the foods and their method of preparation brings the history of MarylandÕs diverse cuisine into sharp focus. Voices of key individuals who shaped Maryland’s early culinary history are also resurrected. They include those of indigenous Marylanders; African Americans such as Sybbe Grant\, Agnes Moody\, Lucy Smith\, and Joseph Peterson; and German immigrants such as Shinah Solomon Etting. In sharing their stories and those of others\, this new volume pays tribute to the legacy of early MarylandÕs skilled culinary artisans.  \n \nAbout the Author: JoyceÕs work as a food historian began more than 30 years ago when she began working as a museum educator at various historic house museums with her desire to interpret foodways and dining styles accurately. She has been a foodways consultant at Historic AnnapolisÕ William Paca House\, Riversdale House Museum (Riverdale Park\, MD)\, the Southern Food & Beverage Museum (New Orleans)\, the Laurel Historical Society\, the Calvin B. Taylor House Museum (Berlin\, MD)\, as well as Hammond-Harwood House Museum. Joyce also taught American Studies at Anne Arundel Community College. Joyce also works with sites across the country to plan and fabricate historically accurate faux food table displays. Joyce has written food history articles for Outlook by the Bay\, MarylandRoadTrips.com\, Chesapeake Family Magazine\, and other publications. She can also be seen on the following television shows: State Plate with Taylor Hicks\, EatinÕ the Chesapeake (MPT)\, CBS News Sunday Morning\, and American the Bountiful (PBS). Along with a B.A. from William Smith College and an M.A. from Penn State University in American Studies. Joyce has studied food history with leaders in the field at various historic sites in England and the US.

A native Annapolitan and an exponent of Baltimore\, Maryland’s Irish traditional music community\, Peter’s work blends singing and musicianship with musicology and history\, humor\, colorful design\, and a vision for traditional culture as a foundation for an intellectual life. His playing reflects his admiration for Galway accordionists such as Joe Cooley\, Kevin Keegan\, and Raymond RolandÑa style into which he was initiated by Brooklyn-born accordionist and National Heritage Fellow Billy McComiskey.  He advanced his playing under the tutelage of Adare-born accordionist Derek Hickey. The core of PeterÕs public work is the collection and revival of traditional music from Maryland to which end\, even as a teenager\, he was rescuing orally transmitted songs from local people who were born in the early 20th century. He has collected and collated the compositions of Billy McComiskey\, and is continuously collecting Irish and American traditional music in Baltimore and Anne Arundel County. Peter is a steadfast teacher of traditional singing\, and trains children and adults in vocal technique\, traditional style\, and declamation.  He also teaches the button accordion\, music theory\, and\, as an affiliate to Irish dancing schools\, supplements dance instruction with an architecture for interpreting Irish traditional music. In 2014\, he and his mentor Billy McComiskey were recognized by the Maryland State Arts Council as a traditional arts master-apprentice pair. He received the Maryland Traditions Apprenticeship Award again in 2019 with singer Lisa Null.  A graduate of the Peabody Conservatory Preparatory program\, Peter also holds a BA in Irish Traditional Music and Dance from the University of Limerick.  He has served as the director of the New Century American Irish-Arts Company since 2011. \n  \nSamantha Suplee is a fiddle player from Washington\, D.C. She studied classical and traditional music with Mitch Fanning\, Brendan Mulvihill\, and Brian Conway\, and has performed at the Embassy of Ireland in Washington\, D.C.\, the Millenium Stage at the Kennedy Center\, NYUÕs Glucksman Irish House\, the Penn Mar Irish Festival\, and the Maryland Irish Festival\, among others. In 2011\, she competed in the All Ireland Fleadh Cheoil na hƒireann in Cavan\, Ireland. She is a regular guest with the New Century American Irish-Arts Company\, and enjoys playing at various sessions in Annapolis and Washington\, D.C. \n   \n  \n\nCancellation and Refund Policy: Historic Annapolis reserves the right to cancel or alter any programs. SUMMARY:Virtual Lecture - The Cryptologic Road to Midway
DESCRIPTION:Agnes Myer Driscoll\nStudents of US naval history are more than familiar with the stunning victory at Midway in early June of 1942. The victory\, due to its importance\, has achieved an iconic status. The battle resulted in the sinking of four Japanese aircraft carriers (three in less than 25 minutes) and marked the high tide of the JapanÕs march across the Pacific. The victory\, as all battlefield triumphs\, was won by dedicated soldiers\, sailors\, airmen\, and Marines. \nHowever\, while most are aware of the stunning aspects of the military victory\, many are not as well informed on the many cryptologic successes that led to US forces being in the right place at the right time. Patrick Weadon joins us to shed light on the incredible work done decades before the attack on Pearl Harbor by Laurence F. Safford\, Joseph Rochefort\, Agnes Myer Driscoll\, and Harry Kidder\, and other cryptologic pioneers. Their efforts laid the groundwork that eventually allowed the United States\, to gain Òa priceless advantage\,Ó not only at Midway but in countless battles in the Pacific Theater during WWII. \nRegistration required. Registration closes one half-hour prior to lecture. \nCost: $15 per household for General Admission; $10 per household for HA Members\, Military\, and HA Docents\n  \n\n  \n\nCan’t watch the lecture live? The lecture will be recorded! All registrants will receive a link to the recording of the lecture to watch at their convenience for two weeks. Live closed captioning is available for all lectures \nThis lecture will be offered virtually by Zoom. Upon registration\, you will be sent the link for the video conference to join on the evening of the lecture. If you do not receive your confirmation email after you register\, please check your Spam folder\, or email Cara Garside at cara.garside@annapolis.org. To learn more about Zoom and to download the app to your computer\, visit the Zoom website. \n\n\nAbout Our Presenter: Patrick Weadon served as curator for the National Security AgencyÕs (NSA) National Cryptologic Museum from January of 2005 to September of 2020. Prior to his appointment as chief of the museum Mr. Weadon spent 20 years at the NSA where he served in such diverse positions as Special Agent\, Intelligence Research Analyst\, and Public Affairs Officer.
