SUMMARY:Virtual Lecture - Fighting and Praying in Colonial Native America with Dr. Richard Bell
DESCRIPTION:Fighting and Praying in Colonial Native America presented by Dr. Richard Bell   \nWhat did Native peoples do when confronted by European settlement in North America? The changing balance of power between Native Americans and European colonists is one of the biggest stories of the 17th century. That tense and constantly shifting relationship provided the context for almost everything that happened in American history before the Revolution. What were the sources of those conflicts? How did both sides try to appease one other? When and why did cooperation break out or break down? Who had the advantage in wars like the Pequot War\, King PhilipÕs War\, and the Yamassee War? Who had the advantage in times of peace? And how does Christianity and the urge to save souls affect Native-European relations across North America?  \nThe Historic Annapolis 2025 Virtual Lecture Series is offered free of charge thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor. If you enjoy this program\, we hope you will consider becoming a member or making a donation today to support Historic Annapolis and our mission to connect all people with our shared history.  \nCost: FREE \n \nAbout the Presenter \nDr. Richard Bell is Associate Professor of History at the University of Maryland and author of the new book Stolen: Five Free Boys Kidnapped into Slavery and Their Astonishing Odyssey Home.  He has won more than a dozen teaching awards\, including the University System of Maryland Board of Regents Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching\, the highest honor for teaching faculty in the Maryland state system. He has held major research fellowships at Yale\, Cambridge\, and the Library of Congress and is the recipient of the National Endowment of the Humanities Public Scholar award. He serves as a Trustee of the Maryland historical Society\, as an elected member of the Massachusetts Historical Society\, and as a fellow of the Royal Historical Society.   \nThis lecture will be offered virtually by Zoom. Upon registration\, you will be sent the link for the video conference to join on the evening of the lecture. If you do not receive your confirmation email after you register\, please check your Spam folder\, or email Cara Garside at cara.garside@annapolis.org. SUMMARY:Virtual Lecture - The Origins of American Slavery
DESCRIPTION:How and why did slavery begin in North America? ItÕs an incredibly important question\, as AmericaÕs embrace of racial slavery as a major labor system is an event which has colored the development of this continent ever since. How were traditional practices of enslavement in Africa and Europe similar to and different from the system of subordination elaborated in the Caribbean and the southern mainland colonies during the 1600s? Why did early experiments there with white indentured servitude fail or fall short? What role did cash crops like sugar\, tobacco\, and rice play in places like Jamaica\, Virginia\, and South Carolina? And what was the experience of enslavement and coerced migration like for people forced to make the infamous Ômiddle passageÕ from Africa to America?_ Registration required. SUMMARY:Virtual Lecture - The World of 1492
DESCRIPTION:LetÕs begin at the beginning. But where is that exactly? The history of North America doesnÕt begin in 1492 when Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue. It begins millennia before then when the first humans settled this great continent. Who were those first settlersÑthe people we now call Native Americans? How did they get to America and what sorts of lives did they build for themselves when they got here? Why did the Europeans come searching for a new world in 1492? What were Columbus and his patrons\, the King and Queen of Spain\, hoping to find on the other side of the Atlantic? And what sort of colonies and empires did the Spanish (and\, soon after\, the French) build on this continent and in the Caribbean when their ships finally hit land? \n  \nAdvance registration required.
