DESCRIPTION:The William Paca House has sheltered many people and served many functions since the 1760s. It was home to a signer of the Declaration of Independence\, aristocratic refugees from war-torn Europe\, and a Navy widow whose sons-in-law fought on opposite sides in the Civil War. It was part of a hotel founded by a national tennis champion and featured in Hollywood films\, and the object of an intensive restoration effort begun six decades ago. Glenn E. Jeff served as the director of the Annapolis Maritime Museum and the Riverkeeper for the West and Rhode Rivers. He co-founded the Chesapeake folk group ÒCrab AlleyÓ in the 1980s and 90s and founded ÒThem Eastport Oyster BoysÓ with partner Kevin Brooks in 1992. He lives in Annapolis with his emotional support spouse\, Louise White and their rescue retriever\, Millie. Jeff has released a collection of the outdoors columns that appear in the Annapolis Capital newspaper. He has held major research fellowships at Yale\, Cambridge\, and the Library of Congress and is the recipient of the National Endowment of the Humanities Public Scholar award. Upside Down is Right Side Up is a fun look at the world of a 9-year-old girl\, PJ\, who enters an unfamiliar place that has new rules\, new roles\, and where few things are ever right side up! She trained at Royal T’s Gymnastics Team in Crofton\, MD. Racine started gymnastics at the age of 13. She competed as a Class 1 gymnast (currently known as Level 10) for four years and competed at Elite trials prior to college.She was the first Black gymnast to win the Maryland State All Around title in 1982. In 1984\, Racine was the first Black female gymnast at the University of Nebraska. She received a full athletic scholarship and competed all four years. Racine was an Academic All-Big Eight and earned two Big Eight team championships on her resume along with finishing twice as a top ten team at the Division 1 NCAA National Championships. \nShe received her BS in Human Development in 1989 and earned her MA in Counseling Psychology from Bowie State University in 1992. Racine is currently a healthcare professional and professional organizer. She enjoys traveling\, supporting the gymnastics community\, crocheting\, and serving the community. Racine is married and has two adult children. \n\n \n \n \n\nAccessibility Considerations: An accessible entrance is available\, located to the right of the buildingÕs main entrance. Prior to joining NTHP\, she served as president of Davidson College (2011-2022)\, where she focused ensuring access and affordability\, reimagining the liberal arts for today\, and equipping graduates to lead in service of something larger than themselves. In 2023-23 she was a senior fellow at the Aspen Institute. \nQuillen was a founding member of the American Talent Initiative (ATI)\, which aims to graduate annually 50\,000 additional low- and moderate-income students from top colleges. She co-chaired the NCAAÕs Commission to Combat Campus Sexual Violence and she served on President ObamaÕs Advisory Council on Financial Capability for Young Americans. She currently serves on the boards of the National Humanities Center\, Howard University and Princeton University. An historian\, Quillen earned a BA from the University of Chicago and a PhD from Princeton.

DESCRIPTION:At the invitation of Congress and President Monroe\, the Frenchman/American General Lafayette toured America for more than a year\, 1824-25._ A young_confidant of General Washington and one of the few surviving heroes of the American Revolution\, the then-aged Frenchman traveled to all 24 of the current states and was greeted by massive public celebrations – dinners\, balls\, military displays\, and more._ Mid-December of 2024 marks 200 years since General Lafayette came to Annapolis.  As chairman of the national music committee with American Friends of Lafayette\, Dr. David Hildebrand has\, for well over a year\, been unearthing\, bringing to life\, and disseminating much of the music composed for and presented to Lafayette when visiting Maryland and beyond._ This lecture will reveal the style and character of this 200-year-old music\, gathered from period music sources\, and it will include both live and recorded musical examples of songs\,_marches\, dance tunes\, and more.  \nAdvance registration required; registration closes one half hour prior to lecture. \nCost: $15 per household for General Admission; $10 per household for HA Members\, Military\, and HA Docents\n  \n\n  \n\nCan’t watch the lecture live? SUMMARY:SOLD OUT - Unwrapping Chocolate's Secrets: A Guided Chocolate Tasting with Joyce White
DESCRIPTION:Thank you for your interest. This event is now sold out. \n\nDiscover the secrets of chocolate at this seasonal in-person lecture with food historian Joyce White. Learn how to read chocolate labels to make more informed decisions before purchasing either mass-produced or artisanal varieties. \nParticipants will learn about cacao\, the fruit from which chocolate is made and how cacao was processed from the pre-industrial days to the modern-day. Learn what factors have played a role in how chocolate has evolved to look and taste how it does today. \nEach participant will receive an individual tasting box. Have fun tasting a wide assortment of samples including cacao nibs\, 18th-century style spiced chocolate\, milk chocolate\, white chocolate\, and a variety of dark chocolates made from different types of cacao. \nAdvance registration required. Program will be held inside in the Conference Room at the Paca House; seating is limited. \nCost: $25 per person General Admission; $20 HA Members & Volunteers\, Military\, and Children 17 and under \n \n  \nAccessibility: Visitors with limited mobility can access this program via the driveway of the Paca House. A single use accessible restroom can be accessed by a ramp.    \n\nAbout Our Presenter: Joyce White developed her love for food history while working as a museum educator at various historic house museums and sites in New York\, Pennsylvania\, and Maryland. Joyce writes articles for local publications such as Outlook by the Bay\, Chesapeake Family Magazine\, and assorted blogs. Joyce is also the foodways consultant to the c. 1801 Riversdale House Museum in Riverdale Park\, MD\, was the consultant for the restoration of the 18th century kitchen at AnnapolisÕs William Paca House\, was the guest curator for the Maryland State Exhibit for the Southern Food & Beverage Museum in New Orleans\, LA\, and is on the Board of Trustees for AnnapolisÕ c. 1774 Hammond-Harwood House Museum. Joyce has a B.A. from William Smith College\, an M.A. in American Studies from Penn State University\, and has studied food history with leaders in the field at various historic sites in England and the US\, including training at the Barry Callebaut Chocolate Academy in Chicago.

DESCRIPTION:In October of 1774\, the people of Annapolis discovered that the brigantine\, the Peggy Stewart\, contained contraband tea that violated the colonists’ non-importation resolution.  In response to public outrage\, ship owner Anthony Stewart was forced to burn the Peggy Stewart with the tea onboard down to the waterline with sails and colors still flying! The burning of Peggy Stewart heightened the divide between American patriots from those loyal to the crown Ð as the colonies continued to march toward revolution! \n \nVisit with the colonial townspeople of Annapolis on Pinkney Street for our largest living history event of the year! Stop in at the Waterfront Warehouse\, the Shiplap House and Hogshead and encounter local sailors\, merchants and business owners and discover what they thought of this historic event. DESCRIPTION:Join us for the 250th anniversary celebration of a historic moment in Annapolis history! \nOn October 15\, 1774\, eleven months after the Sons of Liberty protested the Tea Act by dumping British East India Company tea into Boston harbor on December 13\, 1773\, Maryland patriots held their own “tea party.” This lecture describes why and how Maryland patriot leaders convinced Annapolis merchant Anthony Stewart to destroy his own ship\, the PEGGY STEWART\, in Annapolis harbor to prevent its cargo of tea from being landed and taxed. The incident demonstrated that resistance to British colonial policies was not confined to New England and had some surprising results. \nRegistration required. Williams is a retired Army officer who entered public history as a second career. He is currently a Senior Historian at the U.S. Army Center of Military History\, Fort McNair\, DC\, where his previous positions included Historian of the National Museum of the U.S. Army Project and Historian of the Army Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Commemoration. He has also served as Historian of the American Battlefield Protection Program of the National Park Service\, Curator/ Historian of the USS Constellation Museum\, and Assistant Curator of the Baltimore Civil War Museum Ð President Street Station. He is the author of several books\, including Year of the Hangman: George WashingtonÕs Campaign Against the Iroquois (Westholme)\, recipient of the Thomas J. Fleming Award for the Outstanding Revolutionary War Book of 2005\, and named one of ÒThe 100 Best American Revolution Books of All TimeÓ by the Journal of the American Revolution in the spring 2017 issue. His newest book\, DunmoreÕs War: The Last Conflict of AmericaÕs Colonial Era\, was released in May 2017. In 2018 he was recognized for contributions to the study of 18th Century American military history with the Shelby Cullom Davis Award of the Society of Colonial Wars and the Judge Robert K. Woltz Award of the French and Indian War Foundation.
