DESCRIPTION:Mr. Paca’s Garden Storytime is a fun hour full of reading and activities in the William Paca Garden\, a secret treasure in the Historic District of Annapolis. Each program is designed for little ones\, 3-7 years\, with a book reading\, song\, and craft/art project\, plus time to explore the Paca Garden following the story hour. \n“The Pout-Pout Fish” by Deborah Diesen \nThe Pout-Pout fish is a very unhappy fish\, because he believes that his only role is to frown and spread sadness to those around him. As he glides through the ocean\, many sea creatures attempt to encourage him to smile and embrace happiness. Despite their efforts\, the Pout-Pout fish insists that he is stuck in his ways and nothing will ever change. \nDiscover what unfolds when the Pout-Pout fish sees a beautiful fish he’s never seen before. \nJoin us for a delightful time filled with a unique craft\, singing and dancing. We’ll also enjoy some time in our lovely garden. \nGeneral Admission:  $5 Adults\, $10 Children\, HA Members and Military: Adults FREE\, $8 Children \n \nAdvance registration required\, space is limited. \n Please Note: An adult must accompany their child(ren) for the entirety of the program; garden time is not supervised by staff. Activities are held outdoors on the tented terrace at the William Paca House & Garden when possible. In the event of inclement weather\, the activities will be held inside in our conference room. DESCRIPTION:The Balance of Power in Colonial Native America  \nNative Americans did not disappear from colonial history in the 18th century. On the contrary\, throughout the 1700s\, Native Americans exerted decisive influence on the American colonies encroaching all around them. But how\, why\, and at what cost? How did Native people navigate the rapid changes to the balance of power between themselves and the surging numbers of European settlers now living on the American continent? What did life look like in the contact zones where Europeans and Natives interacted? Who were the intermediaries\, the go-betweens\, who greased the wheels of diplomacy and cooperation on the borderlands between English America and Indian Country? Why did they do that work\, and why did so many of those go-betweens end up dead?  \nAdvance registration required. He has held major research fellowships at Yale\, Cambridge\, and the Library of Congress and is the recipient of the National Endowment of the Humanities Public Scholar award. DESCRIPTION:The first Africans had been brought to Virginia as slaves in 1619 but it wasn’t until the 1670s that slavery began to dominate parts of the American economy. That process continued apace in the 18th century transforming every aspect of most southern colonies\, from Virginia to South Carolina and Georgia. How did American law transform to codify and entrench race slavery in America in this period? How did plantation owners enforce submission and compliance and impose their will on a black\, enslaved underclass? How did they work to try to prevent widespread resistance and what ways did enslaved men and women find to fight back to preserve their dignity and culture\, or perhaps even to escape or revolt?  \nThe Historic Annapolis 2025 Virtual Lecture Series is offered free of charge thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor. DESCRIPTION:Join us on the Paca Terrace and meet furniture maker Bob Van Dyke. Visitors will learn about Federal period furniture with a focus on Annapolis cabinet maker\, John Shaw. \nBob will demonstrate some of the techniques used to create basic inlays. As Director of the Connecticut Valley School of Woodworking and a Contributing Editor for Fine Woodworking Magazine\, Bob has been hooked on Federal inlay styles for years! The “magnolia” paterae that was frequently used by John Shaw and will be a part of this unique demonstration. \nAccessibility: Visitors with limited mobility can access this program via the driveway of the Paca House. Furniture making had provided an outlet to the pressures of the restaurant business until 1993 when he started the Harris Enterprise School of Fine Woodworking in Manchester\, CT. In seven years of operation the school gained national exposure and recognition. \nIn 2000 he formed a business partnership to open the Connecticut Valley School of Woodworking in Manchester\, CT. The school was an instant success and the demand for classes was so great that a second shop was built to allow two classes to run simultaneously. He continually strives to expand his skills and knowledge and has been studying and building period furniture for over 25 years. He is a Contributing Editor for Fine Woodworking Magazine and has written articles for Woodshop News and American Period Furniture. He has also done many videos for www.finewoodworking.com. \nBob’s school offers a variety of classes taught by himself and by many of todayÕs top woodworking instructors. This variety of instructors and styles ensures that there will be something for everyone at CVSW. \nBob’s approach to teaching centers on the belief that people learn “by doing rather than by watching”. Successful furniture making also depends on utilizing a sensible combination of machine woodworking and handwork. Bob’s classes feature hands-on woodworking projects that promote mastery of both handtool and machine woodworking techniques. Bob teaches classes and gives seminars at a number of different schools and woodworking guilds around the country. He is an active member of the Society of American Period Furniture Makers and was the founder and editor of the Society’s quarterly e-magazine Pins & Tales until 2019. Bob resides in a converted horseshoe nail factory in Hartford\, Ct. just three blocks from the Wadsworth Atheneum. His free time is spent researching historic inlay techniques\, walking around Hartford and playing with his 4 grandsons whenever possible. \nHe is especially interested in Federal style furniture and the inlay work that was such a big part of that style
