SUMMARY:Virtual Lecture - The Art and Science of Siege Warfare in the American Revolution
DESCRIPTION:The conduct of Siege Warfare in the 18th century is often mentioned with little or no explanation of how and why it was conducted. Armies of the period\, including those engaged in the American War for Independence\, followed well-established and highly developed tactical doctrines for the attack and defense of fortified places. A successful siege operation enabled the attacker to reduce an enemy stronghold without resorting to a potentially bloody frontal assault. On the other hand\, an effective defense forced an attacker to expend time and materiel resources that might be better utilized in operations elsewhere. This presentation explores the intricacies and the technical expertise required to carry out an effective and successful siege operation\, such as at Yorktown in 1781. The explanation includes descriptions of 18th-century field fortification design and construction\, as well as the methods for successfully reducing them. \nSpecific topics\, such as the purpose and rationale for building parallel and approach trenches\, as well as the employment of various classes of artillery\, are also covered. Williams is a retired Army officer who entered public history as a second career. He is currently a Senior Historian at the U.S. Army Center of Military History\, Fort McNair\, DC\, where his previous positions included Historian of the National Museum of the U.S. Army Project and Historian of the Army Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Commemoration. He has also served as Historian of the American Battlefield Protection Program of the National Park Service\, Curator/ Historian of the USS Constellation Museum\, and Assistant Curator of the Baltimore Civil War Museum Ð President Street Station. He is the author of several books\, including Year of the Hangman: George WashingtonÕs Campaign Against the Iroquois (Westholme)\, recipient of the Thomas J. Fleming Award for the Outstanding Revolutionary War Book of 2005\, and named one of ÒThe 100 Best American Revolution Books of All TimeÓ by the Journal of the American Revolution in the spring 2017 issue. His newest book\, DunmoreÕs War: The Last Conflict of AmericaÕs Colonial Era\, was released in May 2017. In 2018 he was recognized for contributions to the study of 18th Century American military history with the Shelby Cullom Davis Award of the Society of Colonial Wars and the Judge Robert K. Woltz Award of the French and Indian War Foundation. Visitors can participate in washing small pieces of clothing! \nCost: Free ($5 suggested donation) \n \nAbout Our Presenter: Through her historical interpretations\, Roberta Perkins brings to life the stories of free Black women in the early and mid-1800Õs. Roberta started her career at Fort Delaware State Park in 2013\, she researched\, created\, and presented Jane\, a laundress\, who worked for the Confederate officers held as prisoners there. Since then\, she has portrayed laundresses at Handsell House and the Colonial Market Fair in Maryland.

Upcoming performances include Zita/La Zia Principessa in Juilliard Opera TheaterÕs Puccini double bill of Suor Angelica & Gianni Schicchi\, her Carnegie Hall debut with the Cecelia Chorus of New York conducted by Mark Shapiro\, and Lucretia in MerolaÕs production of The Rape of Lucretia. For the 2023/2024 season Natalie will be joining the opera studio at the Bayerische Staatsoper\, sponsored by the Opera Foundation. \nFrancesco Barfoed\, Pianist: Currently based in New York City\, Francesco Barfoed (b. 1996) is a Danish pianist\, born and raised in Copenhagen. A young artist on the rise\, he frequently collaborates with singers and has twice won the Young Concert Artists International Auditions; with mezzo-soprano Megan Moore (2020) and baritone Joseph Parrish (2022). Megan and Francesco also won 1st prize in the Copenhagen Lied-Duo Competition and 2nd prize at the Naumberg Foundation International Vocal Competition. In the 21-22 season they toured with their recital\, I SEE LIGHT\, and performed at the Alys Stephens Center in Birmingham\, Alabama\, the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C.\, and Merkin Hall at Lincoln Center\, among others.  \n_In his already extensive career\, Francesco has been on the coaching faculty at Saluzzo Opera Academy in Italy in 2021 and was an Opera Coaching Fellow at Aspen Music Festival in 2022. He has performed RachmaninoffÕs 1st Piano Concerto\, as well as on the national Danish Radio (DR P2)\, in Italy and in Austria\, and at various chamber music festivals across Denmark\, including the Hindsgavl Festival._ \nFrancesco is currently pursuing the Doctor of Musical Arts degree at The Juilliard School\, where he also completed a masterÕs degree as a Kovner Fellow. Her watercolors have been exhibited at the Maryland Federation of Art\, Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts\, and the Mitchell Gallery at St. JohnÕs College. Cynthia received a BA from Hillsdale College and a Masters Degree in Art Therapy from Wayne State University. Cynthia has been an instructor at Anne Arundel County Community College and has been painting in watercolor for over thirty-five years.

DESCRIPTION:Historic Annapolis\, a Smithsonian Affiliate\, is pleased to present a special presentation with RenŽe Gokey\, the Student and Teacher Services coordinator at the National Museum of the American Indian. \n \nLife Along the River: The Pamunkey Indian Tribe of Virginia is a digital storybook that explores the history and contemporary lives of the Pamunkey peoples. The content of the storybook is organized into four chapters. Each chapter explores a particular theme that is important to the Pamunkey Indian Tribe: place\, community and culture\, history\, and the future. The presenter will facilitate learning and connect this audience to ideas of community\, citizen science\, cultural traditions and the rivers flowing into the Chesapeake Bay. \nRegistration required. She began her career at the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) in 2000\, where she stewards American Indian collections from the Western Hemisphere and has worked in the museum education field since 2004. She designs educational programs\, virtual and onsite teacher training\, and learning materials and K-12 curriculum for families\, students and teachers through work on NMAIÕs Native Knowledge 360¡ National Education Initiative. She is keenly interested in culturally responsive practices and advocating for tribal knowledge systems\, language\, and cultures. \nRenŽe Gokey is the Student and Teacher Services coordinator at the National Museum of the American Indian. She is an enrolled member of the Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma and is also Shawnee\, Sac-n-Fox and Miami from her paternal Grandparents. She attended the University of New Mexico\, where she received a degree in Anthropology and Native American Studies and also studied flamenco dance. She has been working with cultural and art museums for 14 years\, beginning at the National Museum of the American Indian in 2000 as a fall intern. She has helped care for\, house\, and move American Indian collections from the Western Hemisphere for over 6 years and worked in the Museum Education field since 2004. She is keenly interested in early childhood education and literature\, connecting tribal people with their cultural collections\, and continuing to uncover ways to bridge Indigenous ways of teaching and learning (through art\, culture and language) with Western forms. SUMMARY:Saving Cultural Heritage In Crisis: From Haiti and Hurricanes\, Iraq to Ukraine
DESCRIPTION:Historic Annapolis\, a Smithsonian Affiliate\, is pleased to welcome Dr. Richard Kurin\, Distinguished Scholar and Ambassador-at-Large of the Smithsonian Institution\, for a special presentation. \nEver since the devastating 2010 earthquake in Haiti\, the Smithsonian has become a national and international leader in responding to cultural crises caused by natural disaster and human conflict. It has worked with FEMA\, cultural organizations\, and local partners in the U.S. following hurricanes and flooding to save museum collections\, as well as help survivors recover their family treasures. In Mali\, Egypt\, Syria\, Iraq\, and Afghanistan\, Smithsonian teams have protected cultural heritage from terrorism\, trained local professionals\, developed new techniques for monitoring\, and predicting destruction\, helped with the recovery of institutionsÑlike the Mosul Museum\, joined with the U.S. Army in revitalizing the Òmonuments men and women\,Ó and worked with the FBI and Homeland Security on identifying and repatriating stolen and trafficked antiquities. \nThe SmithsonianÕs Dr. Richard Kurin recounts these efforts and concentrates on current efforts in Ukraine. Culture has been at the crux of the conflict\, with Putin denying Ukrainian history and identity\, and Ukrainians fighting for their freedom to preserve it. Dr. Kurin goes behind the scenes\, describing how the Smithsonian has worked with partners in providing supplies\, materials\, and equipment to Ukrainian institutions to protect valued collections and facilities\, holding Zoom conferences to advise hundreds of cultural professionals on best emergency practices\, and supporting Òconservation house-callsÓ throughout Ukraine. He also explains his teamÕs effort to monitor some 28\,000 cultural sites in Ukraine and document damage and destructionÑpotential war crimesÑvia satellite sensors and imagery. \nThis lecture is presented in partnership with the Smithsonian Affiliates and Maryland Hall. The lecture will be followed by a Q&A. \nRegistration requested. \nCost: FREE \n \n \nAbout Our Presenter: Dr. Richard Kurin is the Distinguished Scholar and Ambassador-at-Large of the Smithsonian Institution\, helping guide the worldÕs largest museum\, research\, and educational organization. During his 46-year career\, Kurin has served as the SmithsonianÕs Acting Provost and as the long-time Under Secretary\, overseeing all_the InstitutionÕs national museums\, scientific research centers\, and cultural programs. For two decades he served as Director of the Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage. Dr. Kurin received his PhD in anthropology from the University of Chicago\, aided by Fulbright and other fellowships. He has served on UNESCO juries and commissions and helped draft an international treaty to safeguard living cultural heritage now ratified by more than 170 nations. He has led efforts to save heritage threatened by human conflict in Syria\, Iraq and currently in Ukraine\, and natural disasters in Haiti\, Nepal\, The Bahamas and Puerto Rico. He serves on the U.S. Department of State Cultural Heritage Coordinating Committee\, is a founding board member of the International Alliance for the Protection of Heritage in Conflict Areas (ALIPH)\, and co-leads with FEMA the U.S. Heritage Emergency National Task Force. He has served as Smithsonian liaison to the White House Historical Association and the PresidentÕs Committee for the Arts and Humanities and is a member of the Federal Interagency Panel for World Heritage deciding which U.S. sites to nominate for the World Heritage List.

DESCRIPTION:ItÕs about time! Join guest presenter Steve Sieracki for a full discussion and demonstration of Early American Mantle Clocks. This lecture will reveal the common stylistic and mechanical changes in the explosive youth of the American clock industry. We will discuss how changing resources and advances in technology coupled with American style and ingenuity\, led to the development of these amazing timepieces. \nExamples of the following styles will be shown and changes in the movement discussed: \n\nThe pillar and scroll 1815 to 1825\nThe transitional clock1820 to 1825\nThe split column and splat clock 1830 1840\nThe wood to brass movement transition. 1830-1840\nThe triple decker 1830’s\nThe Ogee 1850- 1890\nWeight driven & Spring driven\n\nRegistration required. Sieracki is the owner of StephenÕs Clocks\, a clock repair workshop and retailer in Stevensville MD. Steve has been repairing clocks since 2003\, marking 2023 as the 20-year anniversary for Steve in Horology. A former member of the NAWCC\, he was secretary of Chapter 27 in New Castle County\, Delaware\, for 6 years before moving to Maryland in 2014. Steve is currently halfway through his work researching and servicing the clock collection at the Hammond Harwood house in Annapolis. At the William Paca House\, Steve has assisted Robin Gower\, Curator of Collections for Historic Annapolis\, in her research of the Farris and Duffield tall case clocks. Steve regularly services tall case clocks\, mantle clocks\, wall clocks\, and cuckoo clocks. He makes his living as a training specialist for an environmental company located in Hanover MD.
