DESCRIPTION:North Slavery in Colonial America  \nWe tend to think of slavery as a labor system that was confined to the American South. But it turns out that that’s not the full story. Slavery was also a fact of life in many northern colonies before the American Revolution. Northern slavery was never as widespread or as essential to the economy as it was in the south\, but it was there nonetheless. What did it look like? What forms did it take? And what forms of resistance to it were possible? Quite a few\, actually. In fact\, in 1741 white New Yorkers thought they’d discovered a slave plot in their city – a plot to burn down Manhattan’s houses\, rape its white women\, and kill its white masters.  \nThe Historic Annapolis 2025 Virtual Lecture Series is offered free of charge thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor. If you enjoy this program\, we hope you will consider becoming a member or making a donation today to support Historic Annapolis and our mission to connect all people with our shared history.  \nCost: FREE \n (pre-registration required; registration closes at 6:30pm)  \n \nAbout the Presenter \nDr. Richard Bell is Associate Professor of History at the University of Maryland and author of the new book Stolen: Five Free Boys Kidnapped into Slavery and Their Astonishing Odyssey Home.  He has won more than a dozen teaching awards\, including the University System of Maryland Board of Regents Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching\, the highest honor for teaching faculty in the Maryland state system. He has held major research fellowships at Yale\, Cambridge\, and the Library of Congress and is the recipient of the National Endowment of the Humanities Public Scholar award. DESCRIPTION:Mr. Paca’s Garden Storytime is a fun hour full of reading and activities in the William Paca Garden\, a secret treasure in the Historic District of Annapolis. Each program is designed for little ones\, 3-7 years\, with a book reading\, song\, and craft/art project\, plus time to explore the Paca Garden following the story hour. \n“Trick or Treat on Scary Street” by Lance Bass  \nWe are carrying on with the Halloween spirit! Come and follow thirteen trick-or-treaters as they journey down Scary Street. Are you brave enough to visit the vampire’s lair? Feeling tempted to sample the witch’s delight? Or perhaps you’d like to sneak a glance into a ghostly haunt? Who will reach the finish line . . . and what final trick (or treat) lies in wait? \nCelebrate the thrills and chills of the Halloween season with this unforgettable trip down Scary Street! \nLet’s go on a pumpkin hunt in our amazing Boxwood Parterre. Make sure you wear your Halloween costume! \n Advance registration required\, space is limited. \n \nPlease Note: An adult must accompany their child(ren) for the entirety of the program; garden time is not supervised by staff. Activities are held outdoors on the tented terrace at the William Paca House & Garden when possible. In the event of inclement weather\, the activities will be held inside in our conference room. Masks are optional; hand sanitizer is always available\, and if you are feeling sick\, please stay home. This program does not include snacks due to food allergies; food is not permitted in the garden. \nAccessibility: Visitors with limited mobility can access this program via the driveway of the Paca House.
